The Snowy Day cover

Book

The Snowy Day

by Ezra Jack Keats

Spend the morning playing in the snow with Peter. Make footprints and tracks in the snow with your feet, snow people and angels in the snow piles, and slide down big snowy mountains.

Then, come inside and have a warm lunch of Grilled Peanut Butter and Jam Sandwiches, a couple of clementines, and Hot Chocolate.

Cook

Grilled PB&Js

Complexity: Nothing is as easy as PB&J! YUM!
Time: 10 minutes.

Ingredients

  • Two slices of bread
  • Butter or Smart Balance
  • Peanut Butter
  • Favorite flavor of jam
  • Two clementines

Directions

  1. Plug in the griddle, or put a pan on the stove and turn to medium heat.
  2. Butter each slice of bread on one side. On the opposite side, spread peanut butter on one slice and jam on the other. Put the sandwich together.
  3. Put the sandwich on the griddle or pan, butter-side down. Wait patiently for a few minutes. When it’s grilled and brown, flip the sandwich over to the other side and wait for that side to brown just as nicely.
  4. Use the sandwich flipper to put your warm sandwich on a plate. Cut diagonally, and serve with a couple of clementines.

Hot Chocolate

Complexity: Easy. Just the microwave.
Time: 2 minutes.

Ingredients

  • Milk
  • Hot chocolate mix
  • Mini marshmallows (optional)

Directions

  1. Pour some milk into a microwave-safe mug.
  2. Microwave for 60 seconds.
  3. Remove milk from microwave, put a heaping spoonful of hot chocolate mix in, and stir.
  4. Take a small taste. Assess if the drink is warm enough. Put back into the microwave for 30 seconds if it is too cold.
  5. Take out and stir again. Take a small taste. Assess if the drink is chocolatey enough. Put more hot chocolate mix in and stir as needed. Add marshmallows to your desire.
